Chocolate Chip Cookie Waffles

chocolate chip cookie waffles

As promised, or threatened, here is my ‘recipe’ for Chocolate Chip Cookie Waffles.

1 tube Pillsbury chocolate chip cookie dough

1 waffle iron

I set the waffle iron at medium heat, because I was guessing. I assumed the innards of the cookie wouldn’t cook if the iron was set at high so we went for medium heat.

Take about a handful of dough and place in a ziploc bag so you can soften it. The idea was to make it pliable enough so it would spread out on the waffle iron. The bag idea didn’t work very well as scraping it out of the bag proved to be rather messy. I should have take pictures of this part but my hands were too messy to handle the camera.

After abandoning the ziploc bag we took a plate and mushed the cookie dough on it. We spread the dough out to about an inch less than the size of the waffle iron in case it expanded.

Gently peel the cookie dough off the plate and place on the waffle iron. Close the waffle iron.

When cooking waffles the rule of thumb is that the waffles are ready when the iron stops steaming. This wasn’t the case with the chocolate chip cookie waffles as they put out a huge amount of steam. The cookie waffles smelled amazing and we kept checking them but no one had any idea if they were ready. After about five minutes of cooking time we decided they were ready.

Getting them out of the waffle iron was challenging at best. The cookie waffle was not unlike a regular cookie fresh out of the oven, it needs to cool before being removed. We couldn’t turn the iron off and wait for it to cool down because we had more cookie dough and there were at least three teenage boys waiting for the cookies.

I tried lifting them out with a fork but that just proved to be a mess. Eventually I just unplugged the waffle iron, donned some oven mitts and flipped the whole thing over while my son tried to coax them out with a fork.

I wouldn’t recommend making Chocolate Chip Cookies in the waffle iron. We couldn’t make them fast enough for everyone and the risk of getting burned was pretty high. The cookies were very good since the outer part was crunchy and the inner part was soft. Of course that could mean it wasn’t entirely cooked but since no one got sick I am pretty sure it was okay.

If there had been any cookie dough left our next experiment for alternative cooking would have been to cook them on the grill. Thankfully the boys ate all the cookie dough and it never came to that. We’d had fish the night before and they would have been nasty.

Our next waffle iron experiment will be to cook scrambled eggs with bacon in the waffle iron. The idea being that if we made two regular waffles and then the scrambled egg waffle they could be layered and served kinda like an Egg McMuffin, a rather large Egg McMuffin.

Do you have any waffle iron experiments?

Breakfast at your house certainly is interesting. You just do new recipes with the waffle iron? Just asking. Bwhahahahhahaha.

    Have a terrific day. :)

I think that when something isn't shaped the way we are used to, and maybe even breaks up, it kind of adds to the enjoyment of eating it. We don't have a waffle iron, or I'm sure there would be many experiments.

  • http://www.ihatemymessageboard.com/ Tracy O'Connor

My kids would love that! I'm not sure why I don't own a waffle iron, I keep saying I'm going to get one but I never follow through.

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

You of all people must get one. If you can do Chicken in a Can just think of
the wonderful and weird things you could do with a waffle iron. Plus, they
don't heat the house up like an oven does.

  • themother

You actually put cookie dough in your waffle iron? Hmmm…

Did you know that if you run more than one waffle iron on any given circuit you will blow a fuse? Me neither, until I tried it.

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

I didn't know that, though, it doesn't surprise me. As it is I can't have
ANYTHING on when I use the hair dryer.

  • http://www.surfiesays.blogspot.com Surfie

I don't even have a waffle iron. I love the cookie waffle idea though! This would have probably been great if you were only needing one serving at a time. I love pancakes with bacon cooked into it. I bet that would work well with waffles too!

  • http://twitter.com/roses2rainbows Linda R.

Creative, I'd have never thought of putting cookie dough in a waffle maker.
Daring, I'd be cleaning my waffle maker for days!
    Does sound tasty, though.

  • Writingwithoutperiods

Wow, now I'm hungry. I love those photos and waffles.
    Happy Friday.

Mmm, the publicist is drooling. But it might be because she doesn't feel well…

She does not have a waffle iron so she cannot experiment.
    Sad but true

  • sheilasultani

I had to scroll down past the picture real fast so my kids don't see it – I don't want them getting any ideas.

Whenever I attempt to make waffles, they end up crumbling into inedible nothingness the minute I dare remove them from (meaning: wrench them off with a spatula) the waffle iron. I follow the instruction to the letter too…ah well, maybe I'll have more luck with your recipe :D

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

Only on Sundays, the rest of the week it leftovers from dinner the night before or cereal.

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

I don't know if it adds to the enjoyment of the food but I do know it makes the calories leak out, so that is good.

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

When we make the bacon waffle mcmuffin I will post all about it. I am sure it will be wonderful because it has bacon in it.

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

A few weeks before I made a cake in the waffle iron. A regular cake mix made about 6 waffles. I spread frosting between each layer and called it good. It looked just like a cake. The kids had eaten it before I had a chance to take pictures.

My waffle iron is non-stick so nothing sticks to it.

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

Happy Friday to you too, Mary. What is the URL for your blog, it didn't link in with Disqus.

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

Then you must get one. I hope you feel better soon.

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

You have a whole summer, you might as well get with the program and start making all foods in the waffle iron. Ooh, we should have a contest or something!

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

They are inedible? Are you using waffle mix? Even if they crumble into a mess they should still be edible, at least for the dog. We always give the first waffle to the dog because they never turn out right, it's burnt or it isn't cooked enough.

  • http://twitter.com/allytales Ally

we don't own a waffle iron. my hubs isn't a big breakfast person and i'm too lazy, example i used to buy frozen pancakes and french toast! LAME, i know.

for some weird reason (trust me, i love chocolate chip cookies) i never like choc chips in things other than cookies. sounds odd, right? like muffins or pancakes, etc. just don't do it for me. i'm thinking that there's something about the mix of salt and sweet in the cookie or blondie that does it for me.

dude, egg mcmuffin, now we're talking.

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

But Ally, these weren't made of a waffle or pancake mix and added chocolate
chips, these were made with chocolate chip cookie dough so they were just a
big waffle shaped cookie, that fell apart and made a huge mess and was a big
pain in the ass, but they were plain old cookies.

Frozen pancakes are about as lame as a person can get, almost like
    pre-cooked bacon.

  • http://twitter.com/roses2rainbows Linda R.

Mine's non-stick, too, but I have had the occasional ornery waffle. I give it a very brief spritz with cooking spray before it heats.

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

I do that too, just in case…I put Twizzlers in there.

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

Too true! You'd better make some more then.

  • http://injaynesworld.blogspot.com/ Jayne

Just promise me you won't go trying to make your wonderful bourbon balls in that thing.

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

Interesting. I don't think those would work because they aren't cooked but
this opens the door to all kinds of new and wonderful kinds of 'waffles'.

  • http://twitter.com/RaisedQueer Christine

Okay, they might not be the most attractive thing, but OMG do they look delish.
I was shaking my head because unplugging and flipping them out would've been exactly what I would have done.
    We've got serious skills.

  • http://www.shoot-me-now.com Katherine Murray

Wow, now I have to try that, even though you said not to! I am such a rebel! Those look AWESOME! I have done a giant cookie before with that stuff… it worked really well on a pizza pan. Other than waffles, that's about all I've put in a waffle maker. I make chocolate chip cookie waffles though… I just throw chocolate chips in them and they are amazing with powdered sugar :)

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

If you do it take pictures before since I forgot to. I really think we
should turn this into a contest of some kind, or a blog parade where
everyone posts their strange waffle idea.

  • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret (nannygoats)

What on earth made you think of waffle iron experiments? I can't wait to see what works and what doesn't. Looking forward to scrambled egg and bacon.

    Do you take requests?

  • http://www.shoot-me-now.com Katherine Murray

I AM IN LIKE FLYNN! Please please please let's do that! What a GREAT GREAT idea!!!! Would it be the most outrageous? Would it have to be GOOD in the end, or just an interesting trial… LOVE the idea Jen… I am SO IN on this!

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

This might turn into an event. What else can be put in a waffle iron?

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

I think it must look like a waffle first and then taste and all that
second…Or not, Pop Tarts in the waffle iron might be cool but they will
never look like a waffle. And Twinkies in the Waffle Iron would be amazing I
    bet but not very pretty.

  • http://thegoodthebadtheworse.blogspot.com Linda Medrano

I've done my hair twice with a waffle iron and it turned out great. (I didn't include any chocolate of any variety though.)

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

Really? A real waffle iron? You never cease to amaze me.

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

I can't think of any other way to get it out but by flipping it over. They might have to do a re-design for waffling cookies. Maybe George Foreman can get on it?

  • http://thegoodthebadtheworse.blogspot.com Linda Medrano

The truth is Jen, I just never cease.

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

You don't. Of course it's two hours earlier there. Time to get back on the
    horse about now isn't it?

  • http://www.weworkforcheese.com Mike

That looks disgustingly delicious! I can do chocolate chip in any shape or form.

When we were kids, me and my sister used to put chocolate chip cookies in the toaster oven, let them soften, and then take them out and put butter on them. It was awesome!

  • http://thegoodthebadtheworse.blogspot.com Linda Medrano

Oh shoot girl, unless we've run out of the coconut lube.

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

That reminds me of the time I made Play-Doh penises for my Ken dolls
because, well, they didn't have any. I left them on the radiator and they
all melted, oozing off Ken and down to the floor.

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

Oh Man, I don't even know how to respond to this one. TMI? Someone make a
    run to Walgreens?

  • http://www.sparklecat.com Janiss

I wonder if it would be easier to get the dough out of the bag if you sprayed the inside of the bag with cooking spray. Ditto the waffle iron – would it be easier to get it out if you sprayed cooking spray on the iron before putting in the dough?

I really would like to see this recipe work with perfectly waffle-shaped cookies. It HAS to be possible!

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

We did spray the waffle iron, but the dough is really heavy and it doesn't
create that outer crispiness until it has cooled, unlike a waffle which gets
crispy while cooking and thus lifts out easily. The bag softening was not
the way to go. I suppose one could flatten it on the waffle iron and then
turn the waffle iron on after the fact. They heat up fast.

  • http://thegoodthebadtheworse.blogspot.com Linda Medrano

For the coconut pancakes Jen. We both just love coconut pancakes and I used those little tube's of coco-paste. Ohh! Wait, did I say tube or lube? Ooops!

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

    Lmao!

  • Kristy

    It sounded so promising…

  • http://howtobecomeacatladywithoutthecats.blogspot.com CatLadyLarew

What a great idea! Now… if you could only get them out of the dang waffle maker intact…

  • 38traci

OMG! I am not sure if I love you or hate you for sharing this — no on second thought, I'm loving you. Definitely loving you!

  • http://www.smalltownmommy.com Anne

It sounds and looks so good that I am kind of bummed that it didn't work out. I wonder if it would work better if you sprayed the waffle iron before adding the dough. I might have to try it but I am terrified of ruining my waffle iron. I only ever use it to make waffles and wont even make chocolate chip waffles for fear that the chips will melt and stick.

  • http://mommamiameaculpa.com meleahrebeccah

    well that looks totally delicious!

  • lauresal

Wow. Combining two of my favorite foods, waffles and chocolate chip cookies. Who'd have thought. Looks delicious. Is it a waffle or a cookie? – A chocolate chip cookie waffle is both a breakfast and a dessert. Must be great with ice cream.

  • http://cranialhyperossification.blogspot.com GDad

Not sure about waffle irons, but you can make a nice omelet by putting eggs plus whatever else into plastic zip freezer bags and boiling them in a big sauce pan. Each person can add whatever he or she wants (cheese, mushrooms, cooked sausage, etc.), and it works out real well.

Oh god that's hilarious. You did a good deed with the penis thing. Poor Ken.

They say you eat with your eyes first, so the picture looked good, therefore waffle good.
