Abortion as Art

This story was published by the Yale Daily News today. In a nutshell it is about a woman artist who artificially inseminated herself numerous times over a nine month period while periodically taking abortifacient drugs to induce miscarriages. Her goal was to spark conversation and debate about the relationship between art and the human body. Phooey!

This is insane.

She used donor sperm from men who presumably knew what she was doing. There are so many things wrong with this little art project I can’t even begin to list them all.

Let me say that I believe abortion should be legal. I like to think that I would never have one but I have not been in a situation where it was considered. I was lucky. I don’t know any woman who has had an abortion who made the decision easily and without considerable struggle.

I’m sure this will spark a debate between the pro choicers and pro lifers. Though I’m not sure which argument it helps or hurts. I’d like to know why the teacher approved this project. I’m also curious to know if the woman experienced any joy upon learning she had a life growing inside of her and if she felt grief when she extinguished that life.

Obviously she has little regard for her own body and also of her offspring. It seems to me a crime has been committed here.

Has it really come to this?

I was all set to make a salmon with lime and corn salsa for dinner but ran out of time and tin foil so I asked the kids and they decided McDonald’s was the answer. My daughter wanted a Happy Meal and son wanted everything else.

The toy for the Happy Meal is some American Idol thing that will be forgotten before the meal is finished. It’s some little guy in a backwards baseball hat with a microphone. The picture of the toy on the drive thru menu has the international sign for the toy makes lots of obnoxious noise ))) so I assume it sings or something. Daughter gets it and turns it on and now the toy is doing non stop beat boxing. Great.

As I am gathering the bits of wrapper and such I notice the directions for the toy.

Is this really necessary? Have we dumbed down our children so much that they need a picture to work this simple toy? How many trees have died because of this one toy? I blame all the lawyers for this. Remember the woman who sued for millions because she was burned by her coffee and now they have to warn everyone that indeed the coffee is hot. I wonder if an over zealous lawyer of McDonald’s Corp said “You know one day someone is going to get a Happy Meal toy and they won’t be able to operate it. The kid will be crying and the mom will be fussing with it while trying to drive and get into a car accident and sue the pants off of us because she couldn’t figure out the toy. Put directions in each of these toys and you can prevent a lawsuit.”

Election 2008 Enough Already, I Am Bitter

Does anyone else think this election has been going on for a little too long and they are running out of things to piss and moan about?

Full Disclosure: I have been a little busy with taxes and my mom to watch the news or read the paper besides my horoscope so I haven’t been paying attention but seems to me they have run out of things to say and are reaching now.

This whole “bitter” thing that Obama said. Is it really that offensive? C’mon, can’t they do better than that? Would someone explain to me why his comment was so offending to the people of Pennsylvania? And when did Pennsylvania become part of the Midwest? I’m just wondering.

“You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.”

“And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

Hillary has called him and elitist because of these remarks. Really? I discussed this here so I won’t beat a dead horse. Obama can be called a lot of things but elitist seems a stretch.

Hell, I’m bitter and I don’t live in Pennsylvania. What’s wrong with being bitter? We should all be bitter. Hasn’t that been what this whole campaign is about? The dissapointment we all have with the current administration and how we want to no longer feel bitter about our government and the people who make the decisions for us?

He said it like it is. Something this campaign has been sadly lacking. Yes they are backstabbing one another relentlessly but they are oh so politically correct about it. We have been subjected to this campaign for over a year now and the only thing left for the remaining candidates is to have a real honest to goodness smack down. I say bring it on. Make it Pay-Per-View. Lets have all three of them in the ring in spandex suits going at one another. You know they want to. And we all want to see it.
